BELLADONNA ASSASSIN COSTUME
The lead heroine in ‘Belladonna Wisk’s Recipe of Disaster’ is a young Australian Filipina, whose culture is very significant throughout the film. Inspired by the Filipino Barongs, I wanted to show her culture in the Belladonna’s assassin outfit. Concept art was done by Theo as we wanted the final concepts in a comic style that was used during parts of the short film.
Barongs come in many styles – one modern type has a ‘cape’ silhouette, which I used as a base to create a hood for Belladonna as her assassin outfit. While I designed the piece myself, I chose the Filipino company, Narra Studio to handcraft the Barong as an authentic, but original creation.
The character also has a love of butterflies which in Filipino culture may represent dead souls, playing into her hidden life as an assassin. I worked a butterfly motif into the embroidery on the Barong, as well as including butterflies in her other costumes.
